from the blog post:
ABC interprets the event in the context of the ongoing debate over immigration:
"Miss Universe officials and observers say the Mexico City audience's incessant booing of Miss USA Rachel Smith during Monday night's pageant was not personal. Instead, they say it was a sign of the increasingly tense relationship between the United States and Mexico at a time when the immigration debate is hot." (snip)
It's interesting, though, that, while we are often quick to ask, "Why do they hate us?"--"they" being just about anybody--we relatively seldom hear the question, "Why are we not so crazy about them, either?" (That would be "nativism," I guess.) For what it's worth, I think this kind of episode has more impact on Americans' attitudes toward other countries than is generally recognized. The fact that millions of Americans witnessed the rudeness in Mexico City will not make matters easier for those who are pushing immigration legislation in Congress.
Imagine what the reaction would be like if the situation were reversed, if the Mexican beauty queen were so publicly and vociferously booed by a US audience.
Imagine what the reaction would be like if the situation were reversed, if Mexico built a wall to keep filthy Americans out of their country.
What would the reastion be if a nationally syndicated show in Mexico called for burning the U.S. flag?
Savage: "Burn the Mexican Flag!"
Of course, booing Ms. Smith is hardly going to help international relations nor do I in any way seek to justify it, you are very naive indeed if you think there are not far more blantant examples of Amercan actions that are far more provacative.
Imagine what the reaction would be like if the situation were reversed, if Mexico built a wall to keep filthy Americans out of their country.
Well, that hypothetical is nos happening. Very few Americans are allowed in Mexico to work. What irks me is that Mexico is a rich country with oil and silver. Therefore, what in the world are they doing here?
What irks me is that Mexico is a rich country with oil and silver.
Having some natural resources hardly qualifies a nation as necessarily "rich." The per capita purchasing power parity is about $9,000/ year compared to $40,000 in the US. The global average is close to Mexico.
Therefore, what in the world are they doing here?
Most of them are looking for better jobs. Why do you think?
Mr. 22,
When I left Cuba I flew to Mexico City and experimented the difference of classes and how the very poor was treated, I was living among the privilege class until I obtained my green card.
The Presidents of Mexico filled their mouth to tell the population of the great income of the country sent to them by the workers here in the USA.
I have a very strong opinion that if you don't like this country, leave it and don't accept our currency, go back to your country of origin.
I also lived overseas in the ME and when the ladies were whining I usually told them: There is Air France, British Airways, Swiss Air, Lufthansa at the airport, get a ticket and go.
@ Catch 22,
Having natural resources gives a government plenty to tax and then help the poor with social programs.
The poor in Mexico are shafted.
But we all know that is more easy to leave the poor behind and not taking care of them because we will. Politicians are corrupted to the bones.
Imagine what the reaction would be like if the situation were reversed, if Mexico built a wall to keep filthy Americans out of their country.
Surely you realize that Mexico doesn't much care for cheap labor flowing into it from it's southern border either, right?
And if Mexico did build such a wall (and come on now, rivers and mountains served as 'walls' for millennia - indeed, they are the very reason for a huge number of borders, worldwide, including that between the US and Mexico), why should Americans care? There isn't a flood of migrants going south. And if there were? Then why would anyone expect them not to secure their border?
Anyway, last I checked, it was harder to get Mexican citizenship than it was to get American citizenship.
If you want to talk about countries of origin, everyone but the native Americans should leave.
That's rhetorically, well, fun, I guess, but realistically naive. My ancestors are from Europe. I, however, am from right here. In Texas. Full stop.
Although, of course, my ancestors are from Europe only in the same way that Native Americans are from America - which is to say, somewhere along the line, not at all.
I was watching when Miss USA was booed in Mexico and the first thought that came to me was, what an ungrateful country that can't support their own citizens because for the elite the poor don't count and they have to risk their lives to come to the USA and take our resources to send money to their families.
I feel very strongly as a former legal immigrant and proud American Citizen that if Mexicans don't like us they know the way to go because one should not bite the hands of those who feed us.
I watch how hateful they are toward the USA. well, they don't have to come here because they were not invited.
My experience having in-laws in mexico has been that the overwhelming majority of them don't want to come here, and are quite happy being Mexicans.
Believe it or not, there are millions of mexicans who really like their culture, country, family, and jobs. They're quite happy to stay put.
I'm also guessing that no member of the audience at the Miss Universe Pageant was an illegal immigrant in the US.
Greck
I understand your point very well, it's not the same to live in Polanco than in a small village that suffered a hurricane and lost everything..
because for the elite the poor don't count
Sounds more and more like America.
The Jones Girl.
We differ in the opinion. There is not place in the world like America. I love the country that adopted me.
I love America too, but that doesn't mean I will ignore the pimples :)
the elite the poor dont count
Bush called fema the worlds biggest entitlement program (why cause the rich can fly away from natural distasters.
barbara bush said teh poor in the super dome were better off.
Productivity up 22% and yet min wage hasnt gone up in 10 year (i know we dont want everything to cost more but profitts and productivity being up means the company can afford more)
congress has given itselves raises everyyear (funny i dont hear many complaining on how min congressional wage goes up not only with inflation but with frequent votes for raises)
and lets not forget we pretty much forgot about the poor in katrina.
Corps can file for bankruptcy but the poor cant.
Bush wants to give a tax cut to the top 1% besides for the tax cuts he has already given them. These are the same zillionaires that dont let the watter trickle down. and then they scoff at things like health care for the poor and say it will break the country, they scoff at lower perscription prices.
Bushes idea of fixing global warming is to wait until gas gets to expensive for the poor to drive(lets forget food goes up and gas will be too much for the poor to eat)
yeah this countries elite love it's poor.. with teh rate of the increase of disparigy betwreeen the rich and the poor.. give us another bush and you WILL have americans crossing the canadian border for jobs. and if he makes our dollar and cheaper,, we probably would like to get pesos in our change.
I have a very strong opinion that if you don't like this country, leave it and don't accept our currency, go back to your country of origin.
Imagine the cheek of an immigrant telling a native-born American how to think about his/her own country!
Perhaps the wall should be built just north of Miami, no?
You twisted my words and posted your salty comment.
To the ilegal or legal immigrants or worker overseas if they don't like the place where they earn the currency where they are living or working, GO
Check the news of this afternoon, an unhappy American citizen from Guyana came, lived, worked, got the green card and US citizenship and he and his friends were ready to blowing up some people.
I twisted nothing; I quoted you verbatim. As for the unfortunate individuals arrested for allegedly plotting to blow up facilities at Kennedy Airport in New York, there is this tradition in America that you ought to get used to: suspects are presumed innocent until they are proven guilty. Don't believe it because some G-man says it on television. He gets paid to do that, and if they paid him to say you were a terrorist, he'd cash that check too.
Are you through with your TTT?
Good.
I stand for what I posted.
Yeah, well go stand somewhere else, then, because what you stand for is not American.
@ Mick McNicholas,
She expressed her opinion. I'm confused as to how this is un-American. I've seen the same type of sentiments on bumper stickers. Plus, here in Florida, a common sentiment expressed is for Yankees, Northerners, etc. to go home if they don't like how we do things down here. Maybe her opinion doesn't represent your opinion, but I've heard and seen plenty of US born citizens express the same thing.
Besides which, Determined0a1 worked hard for her citizenship, and she has earned the right to stand wherever she wants, unlike most of us who lucked into it by birth.
How is her opinion un-American? It expresses – indeed endorses – intolerance, just as the sentiment you mention expresses (and endorses) intolerance. It says "If you don't think, act, look, worship just like me, then you aren't good enough to be in this country and you should leave, by force if necessary." That's yahooism, in the Swiftian sense of the word, and we are so hard-pressed to put up with the plethora of native yahoos that we have absolutely no need to import any more.
Her opinion, so we are clear, was that she is entitled to be here because she "loves" this country and anyone who disagrees with her viewpoint should leave. Archie Bunker is dead. Let him rest in peace.
@2.13
No, we're not clear. I didn't get that impression at all from her comments, and I don't understand how you did.
Maybe I got the impression that determined0a1 was saying that "if you don't like America, you should leave" from the remarks she made in #1.5 and 2.4. Especially the part where she actually says
I have a very strong opinion that if you don't like this country, leave it and don't accept our currency, go back to your country of origin.
and then castigates The Jones Girl, a native American, for disagreeing with her. I suspect it is somewhat like how you would feel, Brenda, should I come down to Florida and tell you that since we always have worn wool hats in Illinois in December, you should too, because wearing wool hats in December is what real Americans do. And if you don't like wearing wool hats in Florida in December, you can leave and go back to — where did your ancestors come from — England? Germany? Poland? Well wherever it was, if you don't like wearing wool hats in December in Florida, you can just go there.
I confess that some of her comments on other threads may have influenced my opinion, but mainly the overweening chauvinism she exhibits here triggered my disapproval.
I'd BOO all of them for being shallow and holding beauty pageants while the whole world is going to war. I guess we'll just wait and see how Ms Universe will solve the world's problems. "All I want Is, World Peace!" *claps and applause* <--- i guess being pretty deserves boos and mr. Bush deserves more time in the White House.
Good Job America!
I think that is Mr. Donald Trump the big supporter of Ms. Universe.
President Bush does not count anymore, he will be gone in 2009 and we will have another President that will create the same reaction than him. The world is not perfect and we aren't either.
Oh, brother, it's like a gang of bank robbers booing a bank for wanting to put in better security.
Let 'em boo.
I boo you, Mexico!
The typical anti-America argument seems to go something like this:
1. We hate you! You are horrible!
2. You are so rich so you're not giving us enough stuff!
3. Your people are worse off than in the rest of the world!
4. We hate you even more, now!
5. Now we double-hate you because you won't let more people in!
If we were really so terrible people would be fighting to stay away, not risking death to get in. One of the things that bugs me is that determined0a1 tends to get brushed aside or ignored in these type of discussions (not necessarily this thread), yet it's determined0a1 who has seen this from other sides.
Brenda, not to worry about Mrs. determined0a. She is just that . . . very determined. When she wants to get a point across, she will stay at it. And, yes, she does have a fairly unique world view. She has lived among several cultures for long periods and come to know them and understand them. Most importantly, she has made and retained friends in these cultures. How many of us could say that?
She has lived among several cultures for long periods and come to know them and understand them. Most importantly, she has made and retained friends in these cultures. How many of us could say that?
True. I wish I could say that.
Brenda, I have many friends of a garden variety nationalities, I worked, ate, shared their happiness and sorrows and .....what happened in ?, stays in ?
I bugged some today and had 4 DELETES, think that posts were very mild, I can't sugar coat the pill, if you know what I mean. However, I know when and how to apologize
Epi knows me very well and she described me to the T.
Do enlighten me, what is great about America?
If I thought for a second that this was an honest question I would answer you. However, I don't believe that you are interested in learning anything about the USA that doesn't fit into your current perception. I tried engaging you on another thread without success, so now I am going to ignore you.
They weren't just booing...At one point they were chanting "O-SA-MA...O-SA-MA...O-SA-MA"
What class.
I live down here (in Puebla, not the DF) and SOMETIMES you get some anti american hate, but for the most part, it's just "business as normal." Not all Mexicans are like this, in fact, most of them aren't. It's probably people just like the Bill O's, Sean Hannity's, Limbaugh's, Boortz's and the rest of those loudmouth idiots that ruin it for the rest of us.
I've been in Mexico for a year, it's a very nice place to be and the people are just too friendly (except for your few bad apples).
But I'll tell you what does burn me to a crisp is to see my fellow Americans come down here with their fat asses and get all rude and mean when something does go their way.
HEEEEEEY!
My wife's from Puebla! I love it there. We were married there.
I posted earlier that most mexicans have no interest in crossing the border; except to go shopping (cause nice clothes are cheaper here) nowhere more evident than in Pue.
My wife was pissed when she heard the booing, "stupid nakos, now nobody's going to want to have anything in mexico"
small world.
ha...I have a shirt that says "nacopulco!"
But I'll tell you what does burn me to a crisp is to see my fellow Americans come down here with their fat asses and get all rude and mean when something does go their way.
But I'll tell you what does burn me to a crisp is to see mexicans come up here with their lazy asses and get all rude and mean when something doesn't go their way, or we don't fall to our knees to support them and give them everything they need/want.
Know what burns mexican illegal immigrants to a crisp?
Working out in the hot sun all day.
These people are anything but lazy and you know it. Shame on you.
So quick to condemn one and ignore the other...
I think you missed his point.
But I'll tell you what does burn me to a crisp is to see my fellow Americans come down here with their fat asses and get all rude and mean when something does go their way.
I speak, write and read Spanish and watch soap operas. What I want to say is that I listen to the news and I would like more respect for our country and flag. The burden of the young people that aren't as hard workers as their elders and advancing for having a better life.
Well how do you propose to gain that respect?
The burden of the young people that aren't as hard workers as their elders and advancing for having a better life.
Where does that conclusion come from that young people arn't as hard workers? Who do you mean by elders? The baby boomers? The fact of the matter is that the baby boombers largely havent saved very well for retirement and they are going to place an unprecedented pressure on the retirment system that is built on a pyramid that assumed ever increasing numbers of workers but its not that the young people are not working hard, there are just fewer of them.
It sounds like you are advocating higher esteem for the US without any rationale for it.
.....they were upset that Miss USA made the final five despite her fall, while Miss Mexico, who was also one of the last fifteen contestants, did not.
Hmmm...Mexicans upset that an American came to Mexico and possbily kept Miss Mexico from getting the job.
¡Qué irónico! ;}
Do enlighten me, what is great about America?
Mr. Guido, what is not great about America?
Mr. Guido, I had 4 deletions yesterday for speaking my mind.
What I had to say, it's said.
Well how do you propose to gain that respect?
Love for the country is unconditional. The USA calls the attention because we have money to give. If we were Ethiopia for example, we would not be microanalyze every move.
There are thousands murdered in Darfur, do you hear any noise like we hear here in the USA? Nah, why? Because in Darfur they are very poor and the United Nations can't squeeze them for their lifestyle.
I kind of feel you didn't answer my question, just gave me a lot of song and dance.
Love for the country is unconditional.
Says who? I love my country but its hardly unconditional nor should it be. This love it or leave it attitude is easy to spout but hard to actually defend.
Would you say the same thing about WWII Germany, Japan or Italy? If it is unconditional does it matter if a government substantially changes.
Of course you are completely dodging the question because respect is not the same as love, nor is saying its unconditional any help either since you said there should be more respect - is it supposed to happen magically?
Odd you seem to imply that if someone doesnt respect their country enough to suit you - its by your definition always the citizens fault and never the government.
Come on, Mr. Guido in 2009 we will have a change of the guard and in 2013 and in 2017.
How long takes for a dictator to retire?
Mr. Guido, I haven't been in my country of origin since I left.
Mr. 22
If you are a Cuban born you could understand better, but you aren't. Therefore, I know that you can't be in my place.
I'm not cuban or any form of hispanic born, but I live among hispanics and I...
1. have no earthly idea what "is your place"
2. also noticed you've still not answered my question
Read #12.
Tell you what, I'll just go ask some Mexicans what I could do to get them to respect my country...I think I could get a more clear cut answer that way
My recipes in Foodies are more clear cut than explaining what is to live under Fidel Castro's Cuba.
Don't miss today's special.
If you are a Cuban born you could understand better, but you aren't. Therefore, I know that you can't be in my place.
Thats totally and competely irrelevant I never tried to be in your place and dont need to be. If your comment was limited to the Cuban born perspective you appear to have ommitted that part.
What since you are Cuban born you and only you can understand what it means to love your nation? I am a American born, since you are not, does that mean you can not possibly know what it means to be American since you cant be in my place? Stop being so partronizing. I for one do not accept that because someone was born in Cuba that they fore are the unquestioned authority on what it means to love your nation.
Catch22
I don't plan to continue this thread with you and how words are twisted of what I meant.
If a Cuban, Venezuelan, African, South American, Mexican, et al are not happy in the USA they could leave the country that is affecting them to be happy.
This is is for me.
If a Cuban, Venezuelan, African, South American, Mexican, et al are not happy in the USA they could leave the country that is affecting them to be happy.
Why is that relevant to the discussion at hand? Are you sure its that easy to return to Cuba? Are you sure its that easy for anyone to move?
That may be your opinion, but its not really relevant to what is being discussed here. I may have missed it, but the only person bringing up country of origin is you. If you want to go back to cuba or not thats your business and also not relevant.
Yeah, well go stand somewhere else, then, because what you stand for is not American
That's your personal opinion only.
Post your standards of a good American, please and lets compare notes.
That's your personal opinion only.
Yes you provide a lot of them in the thread, but when you spout your unsubstatiated opinion you seem to pretned that its the unquestionable truth.
See, e.g. http://asymptotictozero.newsvine.com/_news/2007/05/31/748265-miss-usa-booed-in-mexico-city#c750302
